Michael Wood has been making very high quality history documentaries for many years, and is passionate about Anglo-Saxon in particular. Perhaps you saw his excellent programme on the Anglo-Saxons over the summer? Michael spoke at the York Festival of Ideas this year. Attached here is a podcast of a talk that he gave to a training course for history teachers in Cambridge this summer. He starts with observations about the summer 2013 U-turn by Michael Gove over proposed changes to the National Curriculum for history and moves on to an in depth look at the importance of the Anglo-Saxon monarchy in shaping many of the ‘first principles’ of a just society. He particularly focuses upon evidence from the reigns of Alfred, Aethelflaed and Athelstan. His interpretation is that they were England’s greatest rulers and laid the foundations of modern British politics. History beyond the curriculum and great stuff for future history and politics students.
