‘Tommy Atkins’ talks to Year 9

Richard Gardiner came into The Mount to share with Year 9 his vast knowledge and understanding of World War One. Talking to them as a soldier of the Great War throughout his presentation, he told stories about his life before the war broke out, how he signed up and what it was like to serve on the Western Front. Through the practical details of his everyday life, the students gained new and deeper insights beyond that available in their history books. Neve and Ruby were fascinated by the myriad uses soldiers found for old tin cans and Alizee described it as: “a fantastic way to learn about the First World War.” We are grateful to the Mount School Association for making this event possible.
