Thoughts from the Centre for Holocaust Education at the University of London

Here is a quote from this week’s forum from the Centre for Holocaust Education.  What do you think about the issues it raises?

“That British officials in the Channel Islands obeyed Nazi instructions which led to Jewish
people being deported and murdered in Auschwitz. I think this is very important
for British children to learn as there is a danger that the Holocaust becomes
something which is somehow ‘outside’ of history perpetrated by completely evil
people which we have nothing in common with. I must say I am very concerned
about this aspect among many of Gove’s (and Ferguson’s) proposals for the new
history national curriculum. For example that a positive narrative of British progress
is taught alongside the ‘unique’ evil of the Holocaust. It is important that
students are given the opportunity to consider the complexity and messiness of
these events.”
